Example is the greatest of all seducers.” (French proverb)
Eventually, people will do what you do, not what you say. This does not mean that we can say anything because no one is paying attention to us. What the expression is trying to say is that we should be careful what we model or do, because people will eventually use us as an excuse to do what they already want to do. Additionally, most of our success is due to what we do in private and in public. What we think people are not seeing, they see. And, what we think we are modeling is not truly what we are modeling. How did this get so complicated?
“There is nothing more contagious than a bad example.” (French proverb)
It is said that there are at least four sides to our personalities. There is the side that everyone sees, and the one that we generally try to present, which is our public side. While it is important to put our best foot forward, knowing that we may not get a second chance, we need to understand that everyone else also understands this side of our being, as we all do the same. Secondly, there is the private side of each of us that is usually reserved only for ourselves, and perhaps a close friend, spouse, or close confidante. We rarely allow other people to see inside this side, even though this is the real person that everyone else is detecting. The side or blind spot is what they see in us, but even if we look in the mirror daily, we cannot see this side of ourselves. Finally, there is the unconscious nature within us. It is the part of our being with which our friends and ourselves struggle. These are the things that are inside of us that we neither see nor can describe, nor is it within the reach of any other person. However, it continues to remain within the being, and as real and true as the known aspects of our life.
Now, when you put all these “portraits” of ourselves together, we usually get something entirely different from what we expected. And, then it’s no wonder that people do something other than what we say (unless they have no other choice). So, knowing exactly who we are and why we are put here on earth serves to get people to follow us and do what we tell them.
“The first great gift that we can bestow on others is a good example.” (Thomas Morell)
At your place of employment, you want people to represent you and follow your leadership, but unfortunately, you are not sure who you are and neither are those who work with you. So, how can you be efficient and effective in your workplace? Leadership and being promoted is about more than setting records and excelling in various endeavors. Promotion comes when we are transformed to be who we are – built and intended to be!
You cannot become anything you choose to be! It all sounds smooth, but it’s actually not practical. We can only be who we are built to be. We have a destiny, and the first step is to discover that destiny. Stepping into my calling and beginning to be who I am, things begin to flow effortlessly because I am in tune with my destiny, my Creator, and my nature. So, let’s not try to be who we are in a field chosen by us, but let’s find the field of our Father, and which He chose for us before the foundation of the world, and begin to express ourselves (the true being) right here.
“From time to time men stumble upon the truth, but most of them choose to get up and hurry on, as if nothing had happened.” (Winston Churchill)
We can’t play the game of charades for long, at least not in one venue. Life is so much simpler when I align with the true me! When I am following my real and true calling, functioning in the substance for which I was created, then there is something there that people can really follow. And if they can’t, why would we want to entice them to follow us in a false way anyway? The answers to that question are many. For example, we want control, we are insecure, we need reassurance, and a host of other character flaws that cause us to lead by anything but example. Find the real me and be that!
I hope this is helpful!
