Finding Your Pace: A Message of Rest and Reflection

In the midst of our busy lives, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Recently, while preparing for a leadership training, I was struck by the simple yet profound word: “Pace.”

This concept resonated deeply with me. A year ago, I began training for a marathon, and the most crucial lesson I learned was the importance of finding and maintaining my own pace. Push too hard, too fast, and you risk injury or burnout. Stay focused on your own journey, and you’ll reach the finish line.

This brought to mind a powerful passage from Matthew 11:29: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”1

As a Regional Director for Young Life, I’ve learned firsthand the dangers of pushing beyond my limits. In my eagerness to prove myself, I drove myself and my team to exhaustion. We achieved growth, but at a significant cost. I realized I had lost sight of my own pace.

Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:29 speaks to a deeper truth. The Pharisees’ burden of rules was overwhelming, but Jesus offers a “yoke” that is gentle and comfortable. Like finding the right running shoes, his way makes the journey sustainable.

I encourage you to reflect: What is your “yoke” right now? Is it the need to prove yourself, to seek recognition, or to conform to others’ expectations? Take a moment to be gentle with yourself and consider Jesus’ invitation: Come to me, learn from me, and find rest for your soul.

Remember, even God, after creating the world, paused to rest and appreciate His work. We, too, must honor our own rhythm, our own God-given pace.

Prayer:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, grant me the wisdom to find refuge in You each day. Help me to release the need to prove myself and to embrace my true identity in You. You need nothing from me but my heart. Give me the courage to trust that You are all I need. Amen.
